Welcome to St Thomas' in the Groves! We are a small, but growing, church in the heart of the Groves area of York. We are committed to reaching out into our local community – serving people who are in need, and above all showing God’s love as best we can. We want to celebrate what God is doing in this wonderful part of His world.

We normally meet together each Sunday at 10.30am, and we hope that people find our gatherings welcoming, family-friendly, and full of God’s presence.

If you live in this part of York, you can be assured that we are praying that God will richly bless you and that you will know his love and goodness in your life.

St Thomas News - 9th December 2020

Dear Church,

As we get nearer to Christmas, the 'main thing' we are able to do this year is to open the church for our 'Festival of Trees and Nativity'. A team are coming to set up on Saturday, so all will look fantastic, I'm sure. We hope this will be a way to make contact with and offer some Christmas joy to local people.
If you can help to open the church any day between Mon 14th and Christmas Eve (2-4pm) please let me know when. I'm getting a rota together and trying not to put people on too much!

As I mentioned last week, do also let me know if you would like to come to church for a service either Christmas Eve (probably 11.30pm - more traditional with carols on the organ) or Christmas morning (10.30am) so we can plan for how to accommodate everyone. The Christmas morning service will also be online.
Equally, if you'd like to be in church for this Sunday morning's livestream service, again please let me know. We could accommodate a small number. As ever, the online service will be at 10.30am on Facebook, YouTube and Zoom (ID: 631 970 6882), and Sam will be speaking to us from Isaiah.

We have a communion service in church tomorrow (Thurs) at 12 midday.

Pews: A summary of last week's PCC meeting is in the news archive. Importantly - following the decision PCC made in September - we confirmed that we will apply for a 'temporary licence' from the archdeacon to remove the pews from the church. The pews will be stored so that they can be replaced if we do not obtain a permanent faculty, or we decide we want them back! We believe this will allow us more flexibility in this period of social distancing, both in worship and in community groups. It will also give us the opportunity to see how things feel without pews and to develop our longer term plans. This does mean that things may look less beautiful temporarily, as we make use of various sets of existing chairs. But in the longer term, of course, new chairs and flooring will be chosen which will I'm sure be very attractive! Those who have been part of St Thomas' for more than three or four years will know that plans to remove pews and reorder the interior are longstanding, so the PCC hope that this news will be welcomed, but please do speak to me or to other members of the PCC if you have thoughts, questions or concerns.

Our final prayer meeting before Christmas will be on Tuesday - do join if you would like to on Zoom (631 970 6882).

God bless,
